The copper-clad, double cupola atop the Carolina Hotel in Pinehurst represents classic southern style. The hotel opened its doors on January 1, 1901 and is the flagship of the Pinehurst Resort.
The 4-story classic Colonial Revival, complete with a wide, wraparound porch, and arched columns is one of the many historic landmarks visitors to the area should experience. Some call it the "Queen of the South."
"The Carolina is well assured of a large patronage on account of its equipments for a first-class hotel as well as on account of the increasing good repute of Pinehurst as a winter residence" said H. W. Priest, the hotel's first manager.
Known as 'The Carolina Hotel' in the 1970s and 1980s, the name was restored to the Carolina in 1985.
A walk around the Village of Pinehurst and the nearby Pinehurst Country Club grounds will reveal other cupolas inspired by the original, but none as grand and striking as this one.
